📚 Study Planner App

Background & Motivation

University life comes with a constant flow of assignments, revision sessions, lab reports, and deadlines. Without a clear system to track everything, it is very easy for students to feel overwhelmed or lose track of what needs to be done and when. Many students rely on paper notes, general-purpose reminder apps, or mental notes — none of which offer the structure needed for effective academic planning.

The Study Planner App was designed to solve this problem. It is a purpose-built mobile application that helps students organise their academic tasks in one place. Every task can be tagged with a subject category (e.g. Mathematics, Computer Science), assigned a priority level (High, Medium, or Low), and given a due date. This gives students an immediate visual understanding of what is urgent, what subject needs attention, and how much progress they have made overall.

Beyond task management, the app includes a daily motivational quote feature powered by the ZenQuotes public API (https://zenquotes.io). Research in educational psychology consistently shows that motivation plays a significant role in academic achievement. By surfacing an inspiring quote each time the student opens the Motivation tab, the app attempts to support not just task organisation but also the student's mindset.

Due Dates — Assign deadlines and see overdue tasks at a glance
Progress Statistics — View completion rate, pending and overdue counts, and a priority breakdown
Daily Motivation — Live motivational quotes fetched from the ZenQuotes API
App Settings — Persist user preferences (default priority, task visibility) using the MAUI Preferences API
Offline Fallback — Built-in fallback quotes shown when internet is unavailable

Architecture

The app is built using the MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) design pattern across four tabs, each with its own dedicated ViewModel:

A shared BaseViewModel class implements INotifyPropertyChanged once, reducing code duplication (DRY principle). The ITaskDatabase interface decouples ViewModels from the SQLite implementation (Dependency Inversion Principle). An InverseBoolConverter in the Converters folder handles boolean-based visibility bindings across the UI.

Design patterns used: MVVM, Repository, Dependency Injection / Inversion of Control, Singleton.

How to Run

Clone this repository
Open StudyPlannerApp.sln in Visual Studio 2022 (with the .NET MAUI workload installed)
Select your target platform (Android Emulator, iOS Simulator, or Windows Machine)
Press F5 or click Run

Requires .NET 10 SDK and the MAUI workload. Install via Visual Studio Installer → Modify → .NET Multi-platform App UI development.
