Assignment

You will be participating in a short international exchange trip where you will work with students from other cultures on a project based on the Internet of Things (IoT). The assignment is divided into three reports that need to be completed at specific points during the semester.

Pre Cultural Awareness (30%)

Before you get to know the students from partner institutions you need to spend time understanding your personal intercultural awareness. You should carry out an investigation into the culture you will be visiting. Focus on the following aspects and how they differ from your own country:

  1. Recent history (last 100 years)
  2. Organs of government
  3. The education system
  4. Food and drink

Output: 500 words summarising what you have found out.

Technical Research (35%)

After the module briefing in February you will be put in teams of between 4 and 6 with participants split between the participating universities and be asked to get in touch with the rest of your team. You will then need to work together to investigate the IoT and the technologies you will be using to develop your solution, which are listed at the end of this document. The more thorough the investigation the easier you will find the rest of the work.

You should also learn about the country you are visiting by using the resources listed at the end of this document.

Output: a 500 word summary of what you as an individual have learned about the topic.

Post Cultural Awareness (30%)

At the end of the trip, before returning to the UK, repeat the cultural awareness exercise above and reflect on how the people you worked with and the culture you visited was similar/different from your own, give specific examples. Have your experiences during the trip influenced your existing beliefs? How will the experience improve your employability? How did the reality compare to the research you carried out in the pre-visit research?

Output: 500 words that use your experiences to reflect on your experiences.

CGE Survey (5%)

You will also need to complete the CGE post-trip survey. A link will be provided at the end of the visit.

Grading Rubric

Topic Technical Research (35%) Pre Cultural Awareness (30%) Post Cultural Awareness (30%) Cultural Survey (5%)
0% No evidence of research carried out into the designated topic. No evidence of any understanding of cultural awareness and attitudes at the start of the module. No explanation of how the experiences influenced the student's cultural understanding and attitudes. Neither the registration or cultural survey has been completed.
20% Report does not correctly describe the technologies used. Superficial analysis of cultural awareness at the start of the module. A superficial attempt to show how attitudes have changed over the course of the module. Either the registration or cultural survey has been completed.
40% Evidence of research leading to a superficial understanding of the technologies used. Basic understanding of their cultural awareness and attitudes at the start of the module. An explanation describing how cultural understanding and attitudes have changed over the duration of the module. Both registration and cultural survey have been completed.
60% Evidence of research into all required topics. Clear, detailed understanding of the student's cultural understanding and attitudes at the start of the module. A clearly thought-out explanation describing how cultural understanding and attitudes have changed over the duration of the module. The cultural survey demonstrates a basic understanding of the cultural experience.
80% Evidence of clear and detailed research covering all required topics. A clear and well researched understanding of the student's cultural understanding and attitudes at the start of the module. A clear explanation supported by evidence showing how cultural understanding and attitudes have changed over the duration of the module. The cultural survey demonstrates a good understanding of the differences between cultures.
100% Evidence of detailed research going beyond the brief, clearly recorded and showing a clear understanding. A wide range of resources have been used to derive a clear understanding of the participant's cultural awareness and attitude at the start of the module. A wide range of experiences have been used to show and justify how cultural understanding and attitudes have changed over the duration of the module. The cultural survey demonstrates a profound understanding of the differences between cultures.

Any student requiring an extension or deferral should follow the university process as outlined here.

The University cannot take responsibility for any coursework lost or corrupted on disks, laptops or personal computer. Students should therefore regularly back-up any work and are advised to save it on the University system.

If there are technical or performance issues that prevent students submitting coursework through the online coursework submission system on the day of a coursework deadline, an appropriate extension to the coursework submission deadline will be agreed. This extension will normally be 24 hours or the next working day if the deadline falls on a Friday or over the weekend period. This will be communicated via email and as a CUMoodle announcement.

Assignments that are more than 10% over the word limit will result in a deduction of 10% of the mark i.e. a mark of 60% will lead to a reduction of 6% to 54%. The word limit includes quotations, but excludes the bibliography, reference list and tables.
