Introduction

If, following the open day, you want to attempt these activities at home. All the activities, including the extended activities, are available from https://github.coventry.ac.uk/ac0745/openday/tags.

The Webots simulator is available for free from https://cyberbotics.com/.

Getting started

This activity is intended to give you an understanding of the camera and movement controls for Webots so that you can navigate around the simulated environment.

Open one of the sample environments within Webots.

  1. Open Webots.
  2. File -> Open Sample World
  3. robots -> dji -> mavic -> mavic_2_pro.wbt
    • Or search for mavic_2_pro
  4. This should open a simulation of a DJI Quadcopter drone that you can control using the keyboard.
  5. If the simulation is not running, press the Play button at the top.

Camera controls

  • Pan/Tilt camera - click and hold left mouse button in simulation window.
  • Move camera - click and hold right mouse button in simulation window.
  • Roll camera - click and hold middle mouse button in simulation window.

Control simulation

  • Play, pause and fast forward options on top menu bar.
  • Can also step through the simulation one timestep at a time.
  • Reset simulation to the start (step back icon).

Move objects

  • Whilst holding Shift key, left click and drag on object.
  • Or, left click on the object and use the movement arrows.

Rotate objects

  • Whilst holding Shift key, right click and drag on object.
  • Or, left click on the object and use rotation arrows.

Modify objects

  • Select object in the scene tree (menu on left hand side).
  • Expand the object properties by clicking on the expand (>) symbol.
  • Change attribute values.
    • E.g. Select the cardboard box and change the size.

Robot window

View the sensor information from the robot in the robot window.

  • Right click on the robot and select "Show Robot Window".
  • See how the sensor values change as the simulation runs and you control the robot.
