Windows: Setting up the Virtual Machine

As part of this course, you will need to become familiar with the Linux operating system and the various commands. However, you may not want to install Linux on your personal laptop as a dual-boot option. In this instance, this tutorial will guide you through the process of setting up the Linux operating system using a virtual machine on the Windows operating system.

Installing a Virtual Machine Application

When it comes to running a virtual machine on Windows, there are two pieces of software you can choose from. One is payware and will require a subscription license, and the other is freeware; whereby you do not need to pay for a license. The two pieces of software are:

  1. VMware Workstation Pro (Payware)
  2. Oracle Virtual Box (Freeware)

Whichever piece of software you choose to you is up to you; however the instructions for setting up the virtual environment will differ slightly. You are only required to follow one of these tutorials to get the virtual machine up and running on your Mac operating system. Select one of the links below to read the guide on the software you have chosen.
